Organize Your Financial Records

personalfinancesage_5004006.jpg
SAGE Guide to Personal Finance

The first step in taking back control of your finances is to get organized. Once you're organized, everything seems a little bit easier. How to get organized is not always as easy as deciding to do it.

To begin, you should set aside some time to gather up all of your records. This may not be something you accomplish in one sitting. You may need several days or even weeks to fully compile all of the statements, bills, and paperwork that will be necessary to get organized.

This is ok. Take your time and obtain as much information as you can. Once you have compiled all of your records separate all your bills, banks statements, loan statements, investment statements, tax returns, etc. by category. From this you can separate within each category by account and then by date of the information.

File the physical copies of your bills and statements in clearly marked binders or folders. Designate a place to keep all of these records so you can access and identify them in the future. Be sure to keep them in a place that is safe and out of sight.
